Marty wrote on April 24, 2010 at 8:26 p.m. What an awesome day to cap off an incredible two weeks. After catching a dump truck in the bus window this morning and taking a half hour to get loose, we drove through the center of the devastation in Port-au-Prince. Then on to the beach. Absolutely gorgeous. It was hard to believe that such beauty existed just an hour away from where we had been all week. We all played hard and had a great time. Had an emotional team meeting this evening, its always hard to leave a group of people you have shared so much with. We have all made new friends for life. See you all tomorrow! contact Marty at |

Anna Shearer wrote on April 23, 2010 at 7:04 p.m. Hi everyone!!! Today is our last day of clinic and I am really sad. I know I can always come back to Haiti but the group I am with have been incredible and we have laughed a lot in the middle of this disaster. I am looking forward to our day of sightseeing tomorrow. We will be seeing the epicenter, the presidential palace, the ocean and I imagine just the scenery going by will top it off. I have made many friends here, I never got sick and I have only fallen five times. I am so busy looking around that I forgot to watch where I walk. The team have certainly enjoyed my performance. We do laugh an awful lot. I will be so happy to see you all but I definitely am leaving a big part of my heart in Haiti. xoxoxoxox Anna Mary Mickey Mirt Carey. ps the group just loves my nicknames, but I think deep down they're very jealous. contact Anna Shearer at |

Marty wrote on April 23, 2010 at 4:22 p.m. Our responsibilities are finished! It was quite a hike for those of us who went up the hill today Very steep and , as always, very hot. A community of very grateful people was waiting for us. We gave seeds for planting to the leader of the community, and then had a small prayer before starting clinic. It was a relatively cool day under the fruit trees. After clinic hiked a short distance to a lookout over Port-au-Prince, the Carribean, and eastern and northern Haiti. It was beautiful. The other half of the team went to a very well run orphanage to care for the children. We have packed our remaining supplies to be delivered to clinics in the surrounding area. Tomorrow will be a relaxing day as we tour the city, go to the beach and pack to come home. It will be very hard to say goodbye to our new and old friends, but the thought of coming home is now everyone's goal. See you soon. contact Marty at |

Susan Kettula wrote on April 22, 2010 at 10:08 p.m. Hi Katie, have I mentioned that I'm so proud of you lately? You are so brave to be doing this trip. Both of your brothers have been checking in with me to find out how you are doing down there. I have read them your e-mail to me. I think that they were a little worried about you. Marty wrote on April 22, 2010 at 5:51 p.m. Well, had a first for me on a mission trip today. A very pregnant woman walked into camp about noon today and we delivered a healthy 7lb baby girl at 12:19. Needless to say it was quite a lift for the team. We're all getting a little worn down in the constant heat. Today was our last full clinic, we're running low on supplies. Tomorrow the hearty among us are hiking up the hill to serve a small community that has seen no help since the earthquake. Several of them have made the trip down to our clinics last week but there are some elderly and disabled who cannot physically make the trek. After that we need to inventory and pack our leftover supplies to be distributed to the clinics we've identified as needing them. Saturday will entail a trip to a small orphanage and hopefully a tour of Port-au-Prince to witness some of the damge in the city. We'll be home soon. contact Marty at |

Bill Carey wrote on April 22, 2010 at 4:43 p.m. Hello Mirty, I hope this little note finds you in good spirits again. It's so good to hear you cheerful even among the chaos there. I had my pre-op physical this morning and it's a go for the 28th. I was hoping you could help out with a ride again. Speaking of which, if I remember right, you're due back the 25th with Leah picking you up. If that changes let me know and I'll be there. Left msgs for Ben and Buckwheat, so you should be hearing from them. Ran into an an elderly neighbor lady at the mailbox today who asked about your trip to Haiti. I gave her an update but forgot to ask her name (I was somewhat flustered because she kept checking out my package). Bear says hello as does Googan. The Blazers are 1-1 in their playoff series with Phoenix and play at home tonight. Brandon Roy had to have knee surgery like mine and may not be able to go in this series. It's been a weird season for injuries here in Rip-City. It's better than those Jail-Blazers though. Love you Mirt, Be safe. Brother Bill contact Bill Carey at careybill69@yahoo.com |

wayne orchid wrote on April 21, 2010 at 11:41 a.m. Julie, Something is wrong with GK. Ever since you left she began talking, CONSTANTLY. I don't think this is normal 7yr old behavior (is it)? This has to be beyond normal...something like super abnormal. I didn't want to bring it up during our brief conversations because I don't want you to worry, but it's reached a tipping point. I think I'm crazy. Has she always talked this much? I know I'm spending a lot of time with her, but she talks all the time. Chatter,Chatter, chatter. She's a happy kid and all, but she doesn't even exhale mid-sentence any more. She's developed this "skill" of speaking as she exhales so there is NEVER any break...she just keeps on going, and going, and going... Keep up the good work, and cherish the quiet before you sleep. Much love, Wayne contact wayne orchid at worchid@freeitdata.com |

Marty Schmidt wrote on April 21, 2010 at 11:27 a.m. Taking another day off today after two hot, muggy days in clinic. Saw 900 people in Mariani. Many interesting patients, and all were very greatful. The team was exhausted each day and then got to experience Mr. Toad's Wild Ride on the way back to the hotel (ask your loved ones when they get home). Then we get bck to the hotel last night and one of the other guests severs an artery in her arm on a broken soda bottle. The team sprang into action, stopped the bleeding, started and IV and got transortation to the nearby Adventist Hospital. She is now back at the hotel and looks great. This hotel may be the safest place to be if you have and emergency in Haiti! We will have a full day of clinic tomorrow, and then split on Friday to go to and orphanage and also send a team"up the hill" to see a community that has had no help since the eathquake. Everyone still doing very well healthwise. Thanks for all your messages and prayers contact Marty Schmidt at |

Anna Shearer wrote on April 21, 2010 at 11:19 a.m. Our day off today but still we are out and about. We went to the local hospital and it doesn't look much different from the clinics we set up. They all just lay on their cots looking up at the ceiling. Lots of earthquake injuries still, waiting...they do surgeries, casting, they have an ER and even a one makeshift neonatal ICU with one tiny little premie. Most everything is gerry-rigged up with no of the IV pumps we have, none of the anything we have. I am holding up well, just need to eat more mangoes to be able to go you know what. Bill, please let Nancy know about my blog-I haven't heard from her, also if you could call Ben and give him the blog too would be nice. You at home should all be very proud of your loved ones - they are fantastic people. Our first day at clinic we saw a starving six month old premie that the mother was unable to feed. Worse, she seemed very detatched from her child. We had heard stories about mothers who were willing to give their babies away, or even were ok with them dying so they would have one less mouth to feed. Although we were concerned about this, we sent the baby home with oral rehydration and formula and saw the baby back the next day. She was slightly better, but still very sick. To our relief, the mother is very attached to this baby and would die herself rather than give it up. We were able to find an American/Canadian orphanage to take in both the baby and the mother for two months while the baby is nursed back to health! Today was a very emotional day for the team. We took a very hot hike to an orphanage in very poor condition. There are somewhere around 80-100 children in the orphanage, and 54 who are buried underneath the rubble from the earthquake. The children are not well cared for, and many of them had very vacant looks in their eyes - especially those who spent 1-4 days under the rubble before they were found. It was a much happier place when we left, but we were all struck by the despair that must be repeated 100s of times all over this devastated country. The work is hard, and the situation is hard - but the Haitians are very resilient. This team is an amazing group of people. I feel blessed to be leading them. Know that all of you are missed and loved, and that we are safe and having the time of our lives helping and laughing and loving. contact Marty Schmidt at |

James Schwartz wrote on April 16, 2010 at 7:04 p.m. What a great day..... After clinic we enjoyed lounging by the pool, I swam, most did not. However, there is something strange about relaxing by a pool in a serene Caribean like enviroment, when you know just outside the wall there are people without enough food, water, or shelter. We are so blessed to have been born in the US! This team is awesome, we saw 440pts today, the teamwork is just amazing, what a hardworking group!!!! contact James Schwartz at James.spdx@hotmail.com |

James Schwartz wrote on April 15, 2010 at 9:22 p.m. What a difference 3 months makes, my daughter is a person standing communicating and Haiti has come back to life. But don't think that means things are good, it simply means that rather than the traumatic coma state of shock, deer in the headlight look on everyone face has been replaced....... Ok. Now what??? Well I guess I need to find work, I guess I need to do something, I can just sit around feeling depressed waiting for someone to help me....... While progress is apparent, the daunting task of where to begin must be on they're minds, I know it's mine, but having perspective of time away it's clear that tasks are being arranged coordinated...... The sewage drainage ditches are being cleaned, instead of all the debris and garbage being in the drainage system I being removed and placed in piles on the street to be cleared away by the truck crews I spoke of, 8....10......12 man teams with shovels tossing debris 5ft into the back of giant dumptrucks...... Jobs for people who can find the work..... All be it a literally shitty job..... Imagine scooping the human waste and debris and garbage from a Honey Bucket, placed on a street to dry and form a more solid shape then after it has dried, scooping it with a shovel again and tossing it into the air 5-8 ft to the back of a dumptruck. What a job..... And we complain about our jobs.... And most feel lucky to even have work.... But as my other friends point out.... Unemployment still is around 80% ........... yes you read correctly 80% not 8% or 10%....... Imagin what that looks like and the effect it has on a society.... Look at the problems in the US with our 10%. People are begging for work.... People shovel shit and debris and feel lucky to do it...... Perspective contact James Schwartz at James.spdx@hotmail.com |
